Becoming a surgeon


On this page, we will provide you with tips and tricks for your surgical training. We have organized the page into three categories:

  • First Steps” covers the first two years of training.
  • Expanding Skills” provides guidance for the third and fourth year.
  • The fifth and sixth years of training are covered under “Becoming Independent“.
Basics

Duration and structure of your surgical education


The surgical education lasts six years, of which:

  • 45 to 69 months of clinical surgery, including 6 months on a surgical/interdisciplinary emergency ward.
    • Clinical surgery: at least one year at a category B hospital and two years at a category A hospital, whereby no more than four years may be completed at the same training center.
  • 3 to 6 months in anesthesiology and/or intensive care medicine.
  • Up to 24 months options.
    • Up to two years may be recognized in one or more of the following disciplines: Vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiac and vascular surgery, hand surgery, pediatric surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and urology.

Further mandatory training / courses


  • Participation in three SGC annual congresses.
  • Participation in four education events (“Weiter- bzw. Fortbildungsveranstaltungen), which are selected and published annually by the SGC

  • Participation in five courses, each lasting at least two days and recognized by the SGC.
